Oh, deer

Remember my recent post titled Switch Hitter? About those gorgeous bucks in velvet that wander into the yard this time of year? They ain’t so purty now… 😕
The “lawn” in our backyard may be cratered like the moon (particularly since it is armadillo season), but we do like to plant trees every year. Sure, at our age we may not live to see a lot of them to maturity, especially the nut trees and the bur oaks. But we already had fruit on our fruit trees this year!
Wait — this isn’t about fruit trees. Well, yes it is. We often buy nice sized trees for $5.00 each at the end of the season. We nabbed a particularly nice pear tree on sale last year, very tall and beautifully shaped. Today it is a 24″ tall stick poking out of the ground, thanks to those bucks. 🙄
Evidently the “velvet boys” came in last night looking for a place to rub their racks. It was a violent thrashing, and the tree lost. Bummer… I told husband months ago that we need to fence that area, but he assured me it would be “fine.” He was upset when he saw the stump but he couldn’t help but smile.
I have an idea we’ll be putting up some fence this weekend. 😉
