The “Change”

Long ago, it wasn’t socially acceptable to say the word menopause.  Of course, those were also the days when Ricky and Lucy slept in twin beds, men weren’t allowed in the delivery room, and smoking was advertised as being good for your health.

So back then, instead of saying menopause to describe that glorious time in an aging woman’s life, people referred to it as the “change” or the “change of life.”

When I was about 15, I remember seeing the first signs that my mom was going through the “change.”  Early one morning as I was leaving the house to walk to school, she was outside on the back porch screaming like a demon. I don’t recall what the “issue” was that day; I just remember walking off, shaking my head, and thinking she was certifiably crazy.

Now that I’m going through the “change,” it’s not quite so funny.  And it’s damn sure a change!  But now I know that Mom wasn’t crazy—and neither am I—because it’s not ME that’s changing. It’s the rest of the world.  Young people can sometimes be obnoxious, men can sometimes be jerks, and life can sometimes be unfair.

Please, if you see me standing outside on my back porch screaming like a demon, cut me some slack! It simply means the world is changing, and I don’t like it!

Never saw my Mother go through any problems and I didn’t either. :0). But I have heard some horror stories.
I do remember when Lucy and Desi had twin beds.

And the days when anything going on with our moms, aunts, etc., was called ‘female problems.’ I wanted to ask, “Ya mean, like parallel parking?” I won’t worry about seeing you screaming off the back porch. Now, when I start HEARING you from here, I’ll know it’s bad. Again, I propose two words of relief—Eischen’s Chicken!
